Planning to Start a Business? Here are 10 Keys to Success | Beyond Small Talk

Are you one of the countless of Filipinos who want to become successful entrepreneurs? Perhaps, you’re still wondering what must be considered as you look for new ways to earn during a pandemic.

Beyond Small Talk is here to help you start your startup!

Here’s what guest Dodong Cacanando – who is a farmer, businessman, and author – shared about his best business advice and success tips in starting your own profitable business.

Tip #1: Acknowledge God as the Creator

Ultimately, God is the creator of heaven, earth, and your life. Because you are His child, He enables you to create good things, too!

Acknowledge Godput Him at the center of your business, and trust that He can give you wisdom for your business.

Tip #2: Be creative and maximize available resources

Isn’t it amazing to know that God has given you a unique set of talents and abilities?

To Dodong, who was left with Php 1,000 after building his farm, you can always maximize those God-given abilities and opportunities if you partner it with creativity and hard work.

“I believe that if God wants to give you money, He can always do that. But if He doesn’t, perhaps it’s not the solution He wants for you. God’s great blessings to me were time and ability.”

Tip #3: Acknowledge God as the owner and your role as a steward

Open each business day by acknowledging God as its owner. When you see yourself as a mere steward, you allow God to prosper the venture. And what does a steward do to please the owner? Dodong suggests that you wake up early in the morning, read your Bible, and spend time with God to hear His instructions.

Tip #4: Acknowledge God as your father

Your Heavenly Father won’t bring you any trouble that would harm you. He is always there to strengthen you, prosper you and encourage you in your business venture!

Tip #5: Start with what you have

Stop for a minute and ask yourself, “What resources do I need to start a business, and what resources do I have today?” It could be time and skills, or materials that can be found in your home. Master your resourcefulness and use your full potential as you create a simple yet well-defined business plan.

Tip #6: If you’re an employee, protect your business

I’ve always believed that employment is also a business,” says Dodong. Be faithful with being an employee and with the simple things, and God will surely reward you with bigger opportunities.

Tip #7: Follow the ways of the Lord and be faithful with what you have been given

Would you honor God through your business? Are you humble and patient? Are you truthful, fair, and generous?

As Dodong puts it, Take care of what He has blessed you with and He will allow you to flourish.

Tip #8: Look for other jobs and work hard

Investing in business is great, but it’s best if you don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Going back to Tip #2, be resourceful in looking for opportunities to earn! No matter how small your income is, don’t let it hold you back.

Tip #9: Take advantage of whatever is in front of you

Not everyone gets a booming start, and that’s okay. Great things take time. Just focus on creating simple, quality good or service and be mindful of the opportunities that come your way.

Tip #10: Put your hope in the Lord

Don’t feel defeated in this time of crisis. If you are faithful, God will bless you. He will give more to those who are faithful with their abilities,” says Dodong.

When the going gets tough, pray and trust God more. May God bless your business venture abundantly!

“But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.” (Deuteronomy 8:18 NIV)
